Recycled Aluminum Cans in the style of Didier Triglia

April 22, 2013 is Earth day! To celebrate this day the 2nd/3rd grade class worked on a project that used a recycled object, a crushed, aluminum can. The cans and background were decorated in the style of the French artist, Didier Triglia.

The first step was to create a ‘frame’ for the aluminum can. Each student selected a colored piece of construction paper. They drew an inner line around the shape of the can and an outer line close to the edges of the paper. They then drew a simple design insde these two lines and using no more than 5 colors, painted these areas with acrylic paint. The next stage was to produce a three dimensional effect by adding dots wth puffy paint along some of the lines.

It was now time to paint their aluminum cans. Each can had been crushed. The bottom of the can was crushed to face upwards and was to be used for the mouth and the top of the can was hidden underneath. Students were instructed to paint their cans like a face. Eyes, nose and a mouth were the central features and these were painted with acrylic paints and highlighted with puffy paint dots. These wonderful pieces of art work resemble African, tribal masks. I love that something as simple as  aluminum can be recycled to make a stunning piece of art. Great job 2nd/3rd grade :-)

In 4C we have been creating some artistic faces from old drinks cans. It is based on an idea from a French artist called Didier Triglia.

He makes the heads with crushed cans, and then he paints them. Tête de canette translated from French means “head bobbin”. He uses colours galore and characters sometimes laughing, sometimes sad or angry. They are funny faces with original expressions. But they are human forms and we could almost forget the cans.

This project made for some interesting teacher prep.

Soda cans were collected and I bagged them, put them between 2 pieces of plywood and ran them over 4 different times with a tractor.

One side was then spray painted to act as a primer.

After looking at different recycled art and art materials, the students studied the work of Didier Triglia and made their own can characters.  They used sharpie markers and colored pencils on the can, and then spent time decorating their frames with other recycled materials!  They turned out so, so awesome and the students really loved it because it was something very different than what they have done in art class before.  It was well worth the work put in to make this project happen.
